Does anybody know if Dental and Orthodontics schools have a program where their student will perform lower jaw surgery for free or a discounted rate?
Do dental and orthodontics school students offer to do jaw surgery for free?
If you really need jaw surgery, it will not be done by a 'student' - it would be done by an oral surgery resident. a resident is someone who has a doctorate, but is training in a specialty, such as oral /maxillofacial surgery. they are the best of the best to even get INTO those programs AND they're monitorred by attending doctors.
If you watch, say, House or ER on TV, you'll see residents -- they aren't as smart as the older docs, but they're still capable of saving lives and all that good stuff.
So, call the dental school, explain what you need and they'll set you up a referral. you will have ot talk to the docs in that program with some sort of xrays and consultation; after that they'll be able to give you an idea of how much it will cost. DEFINITELY less than in teh private sector, for sure.
Reply:Around here they do. Why don't you just call the schools in your area and ask if they offer a program like that? What could it hurt. If anything, you could probably have the procedure done at a lower price.

Reply:There are dental schools at university that do low cost and no cost procedures. Generally, the waiting list is VERY long and the procedures performed are at the skill level of students who are being monitored by Dentists who have already graduated and teach at the school.
Call the local university which has a dental school near you and they can advise you about their policies for patient care.
If you are in a dire circumstance, call your county health department for a referral.

Reply:Orthodontists and dentists cannot perform jaw surgeries. This type of surgery is performed by medical doctors who specialize in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. You may be able to find medical schools that have clinics that would offer reduced pricing. I did a quick Google search and have included a link below that provides an example of this type of clinic. Whatever you decide, med school clinic or licensed MD, make sure you do some research before you have this surgery. There are many risks with this type of surgery, including short term numbness (common), long term numbness, and facial paralysis (rare) because of the nerves that run through your jaw. If you choose to go with a medical school clinic, make sure that the procedure will be fully supervised by an experienced oral surgeon. Good luck! If you decide to go through with the surgery, you should check out yahoo groups. They have some excellent orthognatic (and related) surgery communities.

You might want to check dental/assistance schools....some offer excellent discounts for dentist who are training or must preform a certain amount of such surgeries to become certified..my daughter is a hygienist and when her dentist began dental implants they offers 60-70% discount...so I imagine somewhere would offer gum graph surgery discount..good luck.

What would you do in my dental situation? Jaw surgery or only braces?
I am a 15 year old girl. I do not have an obvious under or over bite. I actually have a slight cross bite, but nothing obvious or really out of the ordinary.
If I do not get jaw surgery and only get braces, I will only have three of my four front lower teeth (Very long story short, I would have an overbite if they didn't pull a tooth.). One will be right in the middle. Noone will notice this, but I am afraid that I will be insecure about it forever afterwards.
If I get the surgery my bite will be perfect. My family has the money for it, but I am scared that getting this surgery would be compleatly vein of me. I am scared that I won't like the results (even though every singly before and after picture I have seen is great!). I am scared that I won't feel like myself afterwards.
What would you do in my dental situation? Jaw surgery or only braces?
The best option would be the extraction approach. My sister and I are both dentists and explored both options thoroughly. The extraction fixed appliances option was the best. She has recently completed her orthodontic therapy and although she thought that she would be conscious about it, she isn't. She has a great result. With the ideal smile your lower lip covers majority of your lower teeth so the only time someone will notice is when they get into your personal space, by this time i'm sure you would know the person well enough.lol.

Reply:Well I have braces right now, and it is a long process. So if you want fast progress I would go for the surgery. If you get braces it will be cheaper and worth the wait. If you get the surgery it might be faster but a little pain full, and worth the pain. so just think about it and talk to your parents and decide whats best. Hope everything works out

it isn't vain. When I was young I never gave myself permission to help myself, and now I'm pretty much losing all my teeth, I wish I would have done all this when I had the chance. it is so upsetting. My lower jaw never got fixed, and my jaw hurts all the time.
They don't just do jaw surgery on everyone, if you need it then do it - and be thankful - not everyone has that opportunity.

Front teeth tend to heal faster than the the back. (B) How is your overall general health? - If you are diabetic you will heal slower. (C) What kind of surgery are will you going through? - for minor surgery it is not a bid deal. but if the surgery is followed by any kind of radiation, make sure your extraction sockets are completely healed before surgery. (D) finally, make sure your bleeding from extraction sockets is healed completely before taking any kind of pain medication (such as Aspirin. Aspirin prevent platelet aggregation and you may be prone to bleeding). Make sure you are not taking any anti coagulants (i.e blood thinners which is common in patients with heart condition). Good luck with your extractions and surgery.

My dentist said it could take up to a month to aclimate to the new implant. Had the one done, 2 weeks later would have never known that tooth was ever missing. Had the next one done, and my dentist still didn't understand why it's still killing me after 5 months. It's now been a little over a year, and although it still hurts, it's pretty lowgrade and still improving. But I still think it was worthwhile. Just my experience, hope yours is better.

I am due to have my front tooth extracted tomorrow, and then the first stage (of 2) of the implant process. The titanium post will be implanted and then I will wear a "flipper/temporary" for 3 months.
My question- is this usually a painless procedure? I will have local anesthsia (numbing) and I was told I could go back to work after. Is it generally this easy/standard?

Call your insurance company and find out approximately how much they will cover, and you pay the difference up front. (You'll need to get the procedure codes from the office). Once the payment is received from the insurance company, if you still owe a balance you will be billed for it.
Orrrrrrrrrr talk to others that have used one of the surgeons that do participate in your plan, but remember that just because they participate, it doesn't mean you will not have any out-of-pocket expenses.

Rotten teeth are not good for you. They are rife with germs and puts you at risk for worse conditions, and there are no medicines you can take or home care you can do to make rotten teeth better. Get those pulled as soon as possible.
Sometimes it is possible for your dentist to make you "immediate dentures" that are put in the same day you have the rotten teeth pulled so you won't have to go without teeth. Visit your dentist for a consultation so this can be planned in advance of your extraction (if it is appropriate for your situation).
Whatever you do, get rid of those rotten teeth pronto.

i think u better get them removed, before the infection spreads to your other teeth n gums. n once the teeth are extracted, the doctor will check, whether your gum has been infected or not, if yes then they may treat the gum first and then think of giving an artificial tooth.if the gums are not infected, then they will proceed with artificial replacement of the missing teeth.now a days are many materials used for making artificial teeth,like metals, ceramics etc., u can choose basing on their cost.
REMEMBER, never a dentist will want to leave the patient without artificial replacemrnt after an extraction, coz it not only affects your mastication, bt ur jaws get dropped down in long run, persons without molars get a fold on their cheeks.

The dentist advised me to go for a flap surgery but I am guessing that he is asking too much, he is charging Rs. 10,000 for all the four quadrants.
Is it nominal? or is it too expensive?
Is it going to be a painful surgery? cause he was saying that it will be normal...
And what are the side effects of this surgery? Is it advised to go for this surgery? cause for most of them the actual pain and misery starts after the surgery.

Most of the time it will go back on its own. Sometimes the roots of the tooth are near or next to the nerve and removing the tooth can cause some temporary nerve damage. This is one of the risks with extracting some of these teeth, mainly wisdom teeth. Tell her to give it some time and try not to worry. If she is particularly worried have her go see an Oral Surgeon to check it. But she should definitely let the dentist that did the surgery know the situation so they can monitor it. The nerves are not normally damaged through "careless" dental surgery so without seeing an xray of the original situation it's hard to know the full story. Tell your friend good luck!

The feeling may come back, or it might not. There is nothing further surgery can do but make things worse. You can't re-connect nerves no matter what you read about Frankenstien.

Your friend will have a hard job PROVING that her nerves were damaged by the dentist and dentists generally have professional indemnity insurance with which they can fight cases of negligence.
I have nerve damage in my arm from when a nurse gave me an anti-flu injection and she injected it right into a nerve. It's just the luck of the draw.

When we do extractions I give patients a consent form that they have to sign that lists all the risks, including injury to adjacent teeth, fracture of root, and possible paralysis of lower jaw, either temporary or permenant.
This may be just temporary, She may need to see an oral surgeon or a pain management specialist.

Most of the time it will go back on its own. Sometimes the roots of the tooth are near or next to the nerve and removing the tooth can cause some temporary nerve damage. This is one of the risks with extracting some of these teeth, mainly wisdom teeth. Tell her to give it some time and try not to worry. If she is particularly worried have her go see an Oral Surgeon to check it. But she should definitely let the dentist that did the surgery know the situation so they can monitor it. The nerves are not normally damaged through "careless" dental surgery so without seeing an xray of the original situation it's hard to know the full story. Tell your friend good luck!

#2 Butternut squash soup
Split and seed a butternut squash, roast in 400 degree oven for 1 hr. Let cool. Remove The skin
Saute 2 Tb ls. Fresh ginger, and 1\2 cup green onions for 1 minute, add Six cups chicken or Veggie broth and the squash
Simmer for twenty minutes
Puree in food processor or blender for a nice creamy texture

You could buy some of those Campbell's Soups On the Go. They are in little microwavable cups and are mostly broth, because they have a lid where you can sip through. Most soups are good because they have things in them (noodles, meat, etc) so you would need basically a broth. Try tomtao soup, or some creamy soups. . . .

Our family's shrimp cocktail sauce is made with tomato juice or V-8 to which finely chopped onions, celery, and bell peppers are added. The first time I was assigned that for a family pot luck, I got tired of chopping the vegetables, so I just filled the blender about half way with juice and then tossed in chunks of veggies, and it turned out well. I would guess some vegetable combinations would turn a disgusting color when blended, but even so, the result should be nutritious.
Reply:Since your liquid diet isn't long-term, make a good stock by boiling a skinned chicken or a trimmed beef roast. This is tons better than bought broth or soups! Boil it gently for a good long time (3 hours or more) then pull the meat out and freeze that. It'll be really tender so when you're ready for soft foods, you'll have some. Throw some barley or rice in as your meat is cooking and save those for 'soft foods' days, too. Also boil some veggies with this. Once you've pulled the meat out, skim any visible fat off the top of the stock. Then put the stock and the veggies through the blender or food processor. Strain if necessary. Season to taste, of course.

2-3 basil leaves
2oz cheddar cheese
put carrots in saucepan, cover with boiling water and simmer covered for 10 minutes, add the cauliflower and cook covered for 7-8 mins adding extra water if required. Meanwhile melt the butter add the tomatoes and saute until mushy, stir in the basil leaves and cheese until melted, mix all togehter and puree, not only is it tasty but u can freeze it too

Reply:Home made beef or chicken broth is really good, and good for you, or in a pinch, you can buy the organic (Swanson's Certified Organic tastes the best!). Also, try what I have for breakfast every other morning...one banana torn into pieces, 4 frozen or fresh strawberries, throw into a blender, cover with nonfat milk and a teaspoon of almond extract, and, since I'm a health nut, I also put in a tablesoon of flaxseed oil. Make it thinner with adding more milk so it comes through a straw. It tastes delicious and is so good for you, and actually fills you up! Good luck and I hope this helps. Reply:Since your liquid diet isn't long-term, make a good stock by boiling a skinned chicken or a trimmed beef roast. This is tons better than bought broth or soups! Boil it gently for a good long time (3 hours or more) then pull the meat out and freeze that. It'll be really tender so when you're ready for soft foods, you'll have some. Throw some barley or rice in as your meat is cooking and save those for 'soft foods' days, too. Also boil some veggies with this. Once you've pulled the meat out, skim any visible fat off the top of the stock. Then put the stock and the veggies through the blender or food processor. Strain if necessary. Season to taste, of course.

Also, try what I have for breakfast every other morning...one banana torn into pieces, 4 frozen or fresh strawberries, throw into a blender, cover with nonfat milk and a teaspoon of almond extract, and, since I'm a health nut, I also put in a tablesoon of flaxseed oil. Make it thinner with adding more milk so it comes through a straw. It tastes delicious and is so good for you, and actually fills you up! Good luck and I hope this helps. It typically takes at minimum one week for the suture to dissolve, i.e. be resorbed by the body. If the suture knot was tied improperly or if the suture was placed in the floor of your mouth where it would be submerged in saliva, you'll likely find that suture has come undone and is now missing (you've swallowed it).
One week is just a minimum. Sometimes I see the suture there for two weeks even, but rarely.
There are other materials used in the mouth, however. Sometimes I will use Vicryl, which is intended to last longer. These I will typically see for two weeks, minimum.

Sure. I suppose that while performing dental surgery, the dentist could drill up into the brain cavity. After all, the top of the mouth isn't very far from the brain. I'd say the chances of this happening are very low, however.

There is a nerve that runs down into the lower jaw and whenever you receive Novocaine in the lower jaw with an injection called a "Mandibular Block" there stands a slim chance you could receive some paralysis in the lower lip, cheek or tongue area. Sometimes this situation resolves itself over several days/weeeks and sometimes it doesn't, but the dentist should be made aware of the situation so they can monitor it and make recommendations for you. If it is due to the scratch the numbness may dissapate as the scratch heals, but you should call your dentist regardless.

Too expensive. What if you had surgery, then you got an infection, a serious one? The health unsurance plans in America stink royally. We the payers are getting the short end of the stick for the large Insurance bill. Really good insurance comes from your local farm bureau. Check them out!

Reply:they use to but now they have cut out a lot of the programs... so now it is harder on those at low income or poverty level...perhaps you might try and see if there is a free clinic there where you live.. if not then you best start saving money for you can get the work you need done...i know they even cut out buying glasses now.. i had to buy my last pair myself...if you are well known where you live you may find a dentist that will let you pay on payments...you can try and call around and see at least.. contact your local welfare office and see if they have any helpful advice for you.....

People heal diffrently, And what some people call pain others call discomfort, I, However am a weinnie and If it hurts I want relief NOW.. So, I took The script they gave me and stayed away from cold drinks and washed out my mouth with warm salt water a couple times a day.. Feel better soon...good luck.
Reply:About three weeks ago I had dental surgery and had to have three stitches. You are going to feel sore for maybe 3 or 4 days, and then for me it was also hurting. Definitely keep taking the antibiotics and pain medicine that your dentist gave you until you run out. I would say a whole week before you feel completely better. My dentist also told me for faster healing to rinse your mouth three times a day with a salt and water mixture. 1 tsp in a glass of water. That definitely helped.

Reply:About three weeks ago I had dental surgery and had to have three stitches. You are going to feel sore for maybe 3 or 4 days, and then for me it was also hurting. Definitely keep taking the antibiotics and pain medicine that your dentist gave you until you run out. I would say a whole week before you feel completely better. My dentist also told me for faster healing to rinse your mouth three times a day with a salt and water mixture. 1 tsp in a glass of water. That definitely helped.

I am taking pennicillan, motrin and tylenol cold medicine but I just keep getting clear phelgm and ready to clear my voice box every few minutes. It is a real nuiscance and I feel like sh#$!

It's a cold. There is not much you can do but ride it out. You should speak to pharmacist at the drug store as to which over the counter meds you can take that are both effective and won't interact badly with your prescription meds and motrin. You shouldn't be mixing them up willy nilly.

Depends on what Dental School you went to. I went to Indiana, I am a DDS, and my collegues who went to Louisville have a DMD. We are all dentist and we all practice dentistry the same way.

Difference between PhD & a Dotorial Degree (eg. Dr. of Dental Surgery)?
A Ph.D. IS a doctoral degree - a doctor of philosophy. However, there is a difference between a Ph.D. and the type of degree you mention, which is a professional, rather than an academic, degree. In a professional doctorate, there is usually not a required dissertation, and instead there is generally a lot of practice involved - you would be doing dental surgery rather than doing research in some academic subject matter.

Reply:Ok, if you are going to have dental work, they will stop any blood thinners you are on (plavix, coumadin, aspirin...ect) 3 days before the dental work. It will be out of your system and the blood flows thicker, so u won't bleed as much.
Reply:You should always speak with your doctor if you are planning on having any surgery. Some dental procedures may require the interruption of your Coumadin therapy. Only your doctor and surgeon can make this decision.
While the INR range for minor oral surgery patients is subjective, local hemostatic measures generally are very effective if the INR is less than 4. No oral surgery, even of a minor nature, should be performed if the INR is greater than 5. For most patients on long-term warfarin sodium therapy, the target INR is 2–3; these patients can be managed safely and effectively in the dental office. The normal INR for a non-anticoagulant patient is 1.
Reply:I agree with kits and kats totally. Do not assume any medication changes and self adjust your medication. It depends hugely on the type of dental surgery too (ie big big holes and cuts in the gum vs wee little root being flicked out)
There are ideals for dental surgery, but then decreasing coumadin may have bad effects on the condition you are taking coumadin.... ie increased risk of clot.
Get your dentist to advise you, as he will have a pretty good idea as to how involved this treatment is going to be. He may like to call your doctor to make sure that stopping it is a safe thing to do.

How do you prepair a 6 yr old for dental surgery?
My daughter needs to have three teeth pulled under sedation, to help avoid braces later on. How do I explain this to her.

I don't think I was super scared because all my parents really told me was that I needed to have some teeth pulled...honestly, all I remember is sitting in the chair and I was out like a light within minutes...then I woke up and I was crying and walking to this little room where they let me lay for a while...(they say you either wake up laughing or crying from the drugs)...
I never had an ounce of pain after having the 6 teeth out...the only weird thing is that you can feel all the holes where the teeth came out...and a little soreness if you touch them with your tongue...otherwise not a problem...I hope this is the same for your child...
If I were in your shoes as a mother and knowing my own experience, I would tell her as little as possible, but still let her know that the teeth have to come out...

If she's having GA sedation, then explain that she will be given something which will make her feel sleepy. While she's sleeping, the Dr's are going to take care of her teeth now (so these teeth don't bother her later), then she will wake up, everything will be done. Let her know you will be there for her...every minute (if the child needs reassurance).
Usually, an honest "heads up" works best with children. The more details you share with them, the less they feel surprised. Most children require extra TLC, because there are so many unknowns ahead of them...which causes fear. (Same goes for many adults!)
Call your dental office ahead of time, and see if you can discuss which procedure (what type of sedation) they are using. The more you know about this, the better you can explain this to your child. You'll feel better, too.
You can always have the Dr or their assistant explain everything to your child with you right there. Having you there will help them feel more confident and reassured.

Call other vets and see what they would charge. Some will work with you and telling them it's a rescue cat should really help. All the best;~)

Reply:Stomatitis is a very difficult problem to deal with. I think it may have something to do with the cat's genetic heritage. Sometimes the removal of all the teeth can help with the situation.
Personally I am very much taken with homeopathy for chronic conditions of this sort. I would consult a qualified veterinary homeopath or a homeopathic veterinarian (100% homeopathy) to seek a remedy to treat the constitutional problem the cat has (the stomatitis is just a manifestation of the real problem).
To start off the initial consultation will be $200 or less. The remedies themselves cost next to nothing. After a remedy is given you must keep records of what is going on with the cat etc. and do a followup conversation with the homeopath. Then the remedy will be repeated at a higher dosage level if it seems to be having the right effect.
I think it would be an excellent investment of time and money as it could clear the situation up completely over time and the cat will be in much better condition in the end.

Before going for surgery ensure there are no other options for dealing with this issue (which I will assume is pain in the joints - if you have no pain or infection do not go for surgery as there are always complications).
Please please please before you go under the knife check and double check your surgeon. Ask for referrals from other people with good results. This is a largely unregulated field, and I have heard of so many disaster stories.
I have had 5 surgeries. 4 to correct what they did wrong the first time. I am very lucky I am okay (about 95% recovery), but I know a lot of people who continue to have major issues. Even with a successful result I still have some daily pain, and facial nerve damage that will always be with me.
For me it was worth it as this is compared to pain of a severity where I was taking 3 percocet/4 hours, muscle relaxers, steriod injections into the joints, and was still in pain.
There is a time and a place for surgery - it is important. Before you shell out $40 000 though - make sure you know it will help your overal condition.
If it is cosmetic - I hope you never raise the $40000 as it simply isn't worth the risk.

Well if you're looking for something kinda funky %26amp; non-traditional, you can always go to zazzle.com - they have some great unusual things... and you can even design your own posters, etc. I just searched for "smile" under POSTERS and found a few good ones... like pictures of animals (dogs, dolphins, a zebra, a camel, a gecko, an alligator, giraffes, a seagull, even a dragonfly) that look like they're smiling. Another similar site is cafepress.com. They have lots of kinda funny designs (maybe more t-shirt-appropriate than poster-appropriate). Most of them are cartoons with dentistry cliches on them... but I did find a cool retro image of a boy brushing - that could be a fun route, originals/ prints of old pictures with interesting smiles. You can find pictures with just about any description on ebay (I did a search for "unusual pictures" a while back %26amp; found some great bizarre old pictures of "shepherds on stilts.")
Or if you want to go the (boring) clinical, professional route, there are tons of poster/ artwork sites on the internet: posters.com allposters.com art.com - even some specific to dentistry like discusdental.com
