Coughing blood after dental surgery?

I had 7 molars extracted yesterday morning and today when i do my normal "cough" (from being a smoker) I get a large dark bloody clot looking thing that comes up....is this normal???

Coughing blood after dental surgery?
The most likely answer would be that probably during the course of your surgery (that is a lot of teeth to have extracted) you unintentionally took in blood that wasn't caught by the suction. Since you weren't intentionally swallowing, your epiglottis which blocks food/liquid from entering your trachea and subsequently your bronchial tubes and lungs may not have been shut resulting in some blood getting where you don't want it. If this happens it would be natural to cough but it depends if you were out during the surgery you probably wouldn't.

This could cause you to cough up blood. That stated however, you are a smoker and something more serious may be coming into play. You should get checked out by a doctor to be sure, especially if it persists. It just seems like too big of a coincidence to start coughing up blood right after having 7 teeth extracted... so it is likely but not certain that the 2 are related. Good luck.
Reply:could be tuberculosis cause people tend to cough up blood
Reply:probably a very bloody surgery.

If you're still doing this in 2 days I would call the doc.
Reply:Its probly from you teeth.

It gathers upa dn when u open your mouth to cough, it comes out.

Unless you feel an odd feeling in your throat, dont worry.

But to be safe, go and see ur doctor... or ask your dentist if its nothing to worry about.
Reply:If you are still bleeding from your gums the blood will gather at the back of the throat and could cause this problem. Let your doctor know anyway just to be on the safe side. Wow. how long were you in the chair and why such a serious procedure. That way out of the ordinary. Hope they gave you some good pain killers. You'll need em!
Reply:Could just be blood that oozed down your throat during the night. I would call the dentist ASAP though and have him make sure you don't have dry socket in one spot.
Reply:Call your oral surgeon. You may have lost the blood clot from your molars and could be in danger of getting a dry socket. The dr may be able to tell you over the line that with 7 molars it is normal or that you may need to go in. You should be safe over the weekend if you are already on antibiotics but if you aren't and it is a dry socket you could be in for trouble.
