Should I have Dental Surgery Done while pregnant?

Hello,

I need to get 2 root canals re-done, by going through my gums, so they can save my teeth. The last dentist messed up the root canals, hence they need to be re-done.

I'm 13 weeks pregnant and want to know if they can knock me out, or only do local?

Has anyone had anything done while pregnant.

Thanks for your help.

P.S. I have a consultation with a specialist tomorrow.

Should I have Dental Surgery Done while pregnant?
Since its about saving your teeth and doesn't involve general anesthesia (but does involve local) you should have this done! Your dental health has a huge impact on your health, as well as your pregnancy, and you shouldn't be loosing your teeth just because you're pregnant. Women have had plenty of surgery while pregnant and have been fine, their fetus were fine, you will fine. Take care of your teeth!

(Poor teeth is implicated in pre-term labor and complications including pre-eclampsia and infections besides, a huge reason to take care of this now!)
Reply:Dentists don't like to do these things while you are pregnant.

They told me no - wait until after the baby.
Reply:wehn i was pregnant i was not even allowed to get a filling so probally not
Reply:I'd leave it to the specialist to decide.
Reply:you will only get local anaesthetic.
Reply:You can have the root canal but under a local only...no general ana!
Reply:You shouldn't be asking the world wide web. You should ask a doctor or like you said you are meeting with someone. So this question online isn't going to get you good answers. It could be dangerous...
Reply:I had an appointment to get a cavity filled, and as soon as I told them I was pregnant they cancelled, and told me to book about a month after my baby is born. they don't like to do that stuff when you're pregnant

*EDIT*

I am only 14 weeks along, and they won't even fill a cavity. I know I wouldn't take the chance. I do go in for regular cleanings, and those are ok to have done.
Reply:You can but they can't give you any pain killers afterwards. I believe they can numb your mouth up and that's about it. So for the days after you will feel all the pain. So if you take pain well sure why not, otherwise you might wait until after the baby is born.
Reply:No ! If their is any pain or discomfort afterward you will not be able to take medication due to your pregnancy.
Reply:when having any any any surgery get at least 3 opinions

no matter what. check and be safe. good luck.
Reply:first off they probably won't and should do this surgery once you tell them your pregnant and if you don't tell them it could result in you losing the baby. if they put you to sleep i was told you will lose the baby for sure.
Reply:Second trimester is the safest if you MUST have dental work. I had a root canal while pregnant... no antiboitics or pain meds afterwards though. But I had the local....no, they CAN NOT knock you out and no xrays.

Just double check with you DR for your best interest then go for it! 2? Yowch!
Reply:I would wait if you can. I had a root canal done and they can't give you something in the numbing shot that makes it last so I had to have around six shots in one appointment. It was horrible. They can give you x-rays they put two bibs on you. And they also do give you pain meds. ( I didn't take them) You can also have antibiotics. Were are these people getting their info? Sometimes you have to have it done because the infections caused by a root canal could cause complications with your pregnancy. Talk to your OB doc and Dentist.
Reply:I think it would be okay with a local but I would be a little sceptical about being knocked out. I would talk to your dentist and consult your OB. If you work with the two of them together they can consult you on what's best.
Reply:I had to have a root canal done while I was pregnant. They gave me local anesthetic and epinephrine. My doctor wrote a note stating what meds could be used and it had to be done after the first tri-mester.
Reply:It's not a good idea to have x-rays done while pregnant or even be near them, so if they are going to do that beforehand i definitely would wait.
Reply:I just had my 4 wisdom teeth extracted 2 weeks ago, and I'm 24wks pregnant. They were already grown down so they just needed to be pulled out, and all they used was novacaine. They won't put you under at all while you're pregnant, but you can get dental work done with using just novacaine, if that's an option for you.
Reply:talk to your doctor about it first. i don't think it will be wise to do it though. wait until the baby is born.
Reply:I had a root canal when I was pregnant. But it was pretty necessary. They were afraid that the bacteria from the rotting tooth I had was going to hurt the baby.

They didn't knock me out - I just had a local. I did take pain medicine afterwards after talking to the dentist, my doctor, and two other doctor friends who all insisted that the pain medicine would not harm the baby.

I had my son in December 2004 and he's healthy, smart, lovable. Looks like it didn't do any damage!

Hope that helps you. I would talk to the specialist and see what they say. Good luck and congrats!
