The DDS is a professional degree and indicates that the person holding the degree has completed training in that profession. It is equivalent to an MD, except it applies to the field of dentistry. I suppose it is roughly equivalent to a PhD, however research (including a master's degree) and professional degrees differ in the way that candidates are trained, so they're not comparable (I say this from experience)
