How can I ease the pain after dental surgery?

I got my two bottom wisdom teeth pulled last Friday. Its been a week now and I am in as much pain as I was after the surgery. I am allergic to the medication that I was given. What can I do to help ease the pain and discomfort?

Sweetie it sounds like you have a dry socket. What that is the area were the tooth was removed is open to the bone and its not healing over it so you need to go back to your dentist or oral surgeon who removed your wisdom teeth. What they do is place a medication down into area so it will heal properly.

I really hope you feel better soon. Take care.
Reply:Motrin 800mg. on a full stomach. Are you sure you don't have an infection?
Reply:3 advil 3 times a day and apply ice packs to the cheek area where they were pulled.

Don't do the advil thing more than 1 week. If you are still hurting, call the dentist.
Reply:A week is to long to still be having that pain. It sounds like a "dry socket", you get these from smoking after having a tooth pulled, or sucking on a straw, or even just because.. Call your Dentist, and tell them you think you have a dry socket. They should be able to pack it with some medicated gauze and the relief should be almost immediate. Don't delay. This pain will not go away if it is indeed a dry socket. Also, you should have told them that you had a reaction to the medication, now would be a good time. Right now, to relieve the pain, you can take 3 ibuprofen and one extra strength Tylenol You can only do this 2 or 3 times, or you risk damaging your liver and kidneys. so only until you can get to the dentist. Also, ask the doctor to give you a rinse that can help as well.

Good luck
Reply:welcome to the club - I got 3 wisdom teeth reoved 2 days before Xmas my senior yr in college and even with the pains pills the dentist gave me, I was in agony until New Years eve-that day was pain free finally
Reply:You could try taking Ibuprofen or Motrin up to 800mg because it is both anti-inflammatory and anti-pain. Otherwise, ask for a different pain medication (Tylenol 3, Vicodin, Vicoprofen). Are you sure you are allergic to the medication. Allergic reactions usually cause itching. It is not an allergic reaction if you become tired or get a stomach aches. Just take the medication with some food. And for the dry socket, usually they occur 3-4 days after surgery. If it is dry socket, than you would be in so much pain that you would call your dentist right now.
