Dental clearance?

hi, i'm 35 y.o. and having hip replacement surgery on june 24th, i was told i need dental clearance. why and is it necessary to get dental clearance???

Dental clearance?
Sounds like you have a doctor with a high dental IQ.

When you have a hip replacement you essentially will have a foreign object in your body that can be come a site of infection. The thought is that when you have dental work done (especially with cleanings) you're releasing bacteria that was lodged onto your teeth into your system which could become attached to your metal hip and cause an infection which would cause your hip replacement to fail. Currently it's recommended that you take antibiotics prior to any dental work for AT LEAST the first 6 months following a joint replacement to prevent infection, butit's better to have all your dental work done BEFORE your surgery to reduce the risk of complications after your surgery. Also if you need a lot of dental work done it's not fun to take antibiotics prior to every dental appointment (not mention that the dental appointments will need to be spaced further out to prevent resistance to the antibiotic being used).

Is it absolutely necessary - probably not, but it is a good idea nonetheless.
