Question about Underbite Surgery?
Hello , I am an oral surgery assistant and what you have is a "Class III Malocclusion", also referred to as an underbite. This gives the apperance of the mandibular (lower jaw) anterior teeth protuding in front of the maxillary (upper jaw) anterior teeth. The first step to take is to see an orthodontist. They will let you know your options and most likely you will be placed into braces. After some treatment you will have to see an oral surgeon. Once you have a consult with the oral surgeon they will discuss with you in detail what surgery, if needed, will be.

The surgery will consist of making incisions just under both ears and possibly two in your mouth just above your upper

k-9 teeth. They will then cut your maxilla (upper jaw bone) and possibly your mandible (lower), if needed, and shift forward until they have normal occlusion. They will then place pins if needed. In some cases they have to wire the patients mouth shut for up to 4-6 weeks. When the surgery is over you will have instant results but you will be very swollen. The swelling will gradually get better but usually takes about 4-6 weeks to completely go away. Once you have healed you may have to have braces put back on your teeth. Insurance is very tricky and can be very costly. If you are having pain associated with this and it is not just for cosmetic reasons then your medical and dental may pick most of it up. My advice is to research your insurance group, make an appointment with an orthodontist and find out your options. The patients that have had this surgery are very happy with the outcome and all say that it is worth it. The most important thing is to take care of your teeth before and after surgery. This surgery will do you no good if oral hygeine is not at the top of your list. I wish you luck...
Reply:Do you mean cross bite? As in your bottom teeth overlap your top? I have that as well. I was once about to have corrective surgery but I backed out. For me they were planning to break my top (palette) and screw it into a different position. They were also going to break the bottom jaw and screw it into a different position. I had to have braces before hand and was going to need them again afterwards.

I decided that I was happy with the way things were and did not have the surgery. But I do not experience much pain from my cross bite, if I did I would have had the surgery.

I went to a regular dentist and he referred me to an oral-maxillofacial surgeon. I also saw a medical doctor. It can be hard to get dental insurance to cover it, because you have to show that it is neccesary and not just "cosmetic".

My brother on the other hand also had a cross bite (possibly genetic?). His was mild and they repaired his with dental crowns.
Reply:Dental surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and Lasik surgery in India by a company called Indian Health Guru Consultants. The Price for dental and Lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.

Indian Health Guru Consultants is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, Lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories.

They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
