I know of two instances. 1 of the child getting sick and 1 of them not doing the surgery until the 4 hr time period has elapsed. It isn't just throwing up, it's also to do with the weight of the person and how much sedation to give. If your baby has been feed he or she might not get enough medication and will feel or have pain through the surgery. The hour of crankiness is worth your baby not feeling pain!
Reply:Yup, while my son was in NICU a big baby was brought in and put on a ventilator, obviously not premature. He was put in the humidicrib next to my son, and the mother and I got talking. Turned out he had gone in for a hernia repair, and she'd breastfed him just before he got sedated, because he was so distressed. He aspirated the breastmilk during the operation because his gullet had relaxed so much the milk flowed back up the oesophagus. One of his lungs collapsed. He ended up okay, but had scarred lungs from the collapse and the ventilation.

When my son needed his hernia's repaired three months later or so...I remembered that little boy, and no matter how much my poor son cried, there was no way I was going to give him a breastfeed.
